Downhill Climb Days 94-95: A Time To Celebrate

The marriage of my daughter Chelsea to Jorge Mendez. A great event

No, this is not what you’re thinking! I did not hit my 400 pound goal by July 4. That’s OK, I will get there soon. There is no doubt about it!

A shot with my daughters and granddaughter. I was actually astonished at how I had thinned out.

Rather, I note the cause for celebration to be my daughter’s wedding on July 3.  It was a simple affair at her house, but it came with lots of good food. There was some Mexican food (chicken tinga, shrimp cocktail and ceviche), sushi, spring rolls, Thai noodle salad, fresh fruit and jicama. And, of course, the sinfully tasty homemade carrot cake that was made for the wedding cake by my sweetheart. It must be healthy because it has walnuts, raisins and tons of carrots in it!! (never mind the eggs, cream cheese, powdered sugar, shortening, buttermilk…) in any case, my wife and I decided that we too would celebrate by enjoying whatever was there.

So, again, there will likely not be a celebration on July 4 for hitting 400 pounds or less.  In fact, I dreaded getting on the scale this morning as I was sure there has been an increase due to the last couple of days.  And indeed there was…  (frowny face goes here)

Julianne made this heavy Carrot Cake for the wedding. And yes, we did indulge…

But isn’t feasting the proper thing to do for a celebration of this manner? Isn’t occasionally indulging in the niceties of life in the midst of this dietary and healthy journey that I am on OK periodically? In the end, ultimately I make the decisions what goes in my mouth. And sometimes it does go in my end rather than out of it.  (did I really say that?)

To anyone who may have questioned, no! I have not lost my resolve! I just finished up a difficult week with long working hours that culminated in the celebration of a daughter getting married. That’s all.

I spent July 4 morning helping with cleaning the church and then we did some shopping and far away parking.  I actually put in nearly 8,000 steps yesterday, which is a good thing!!

I put in alot of steps on July 4

After we finished our last pieces of carrot cake yesterday and had a Fourth of July celebration with my daughter Marissa’s family and a few other things of good food — mostly healthy (we found vegan brats that we can cook on the grill!), we will be back on the main track today.

We found some amazing vegan whole grain sausages made by a company called Field Roast out of Seattle.  They are available at Fresh Market in Lexington.  We bought two flavors to try at the cookout instead of eating the hamburgers.

As they note on their website, “Field Roast begins with a grind; ours of grain meat. They chop their own fresh vegetables; eggplant, Yukon Gold potatoes, onions and garlic. Add some liquids; zesty lemon juice, rich red wine from a local winery, organic apple cider vinegar and finally the seasonings; fennel seed, sweet red pepper, rubbed sage, ginger, Chipotle and Chili de Arbol peppers and voila!; an artisan vegan sausage with sizzle, texture and personality!”  These were actually pretty good.

  • Italian – made with fresh eggplant and packed with fennel, red wine, garlic and sweet peppers
  • Mexican Chipotle – a spicy-hot blend of smoked Chipotle peppers, Chili de Arbol peppers, fresh chopped garlic, sweet onions seasoned with cumin seed and oregano

After the heavy weekend, I did need a bit of a rest.

Along with those we had some freshly made spicy guacamole, corn on the cob and some chips.  I also found some really nice fresh pickles.  So, other than a couple of slices of zucchini bread made by my son-in-law’s parents (the zucchini was still in their garden on July 3!), we ate fairly well.

Yes, July 5 is back on the train and back on the track and continuing the downhill climb. Never fear, 400 is near!

Well, actually, the weekend caused it to be a few more further away….just to be open and honest…this past few days add FIVE pounds.  I weighed in at just over 415 this morning.  It will come off.  A weekend of indulgence can do this.  Take heed.

Look out roads…Sumoflam will be patting his feet soon….
