Fitness Challenge Day 12 – We Are Not Alone

I have been on this quest for less than two weeks and continue to be inspired by the fact that I am “not alone.”  My Team Sumoflam Facebook Page has gotten 102 likes in four days, which shows the great support that friends have given.  I am so grateful for friendship and encouragement.

I spent Sunday in rest and recovery.  My knees were shot from Saturday’s efforts.  I didn’t ease up on the healthful eating alternatives however (see below).  But, this day was also one of reflection.

Walking together

In this path of life all of us are walking the same path and we’re all heading to the same destinations. It may seem like we’re all going in different directions, but ultimately, we are all walking the path of life.

The Path of Life

And as I pursue my goal for better health and a longer life, I’ve come to realize that we are all going at our own pace on this path. There are some behind and there are some ahead. It is not ours to compare ourselves to the others trodding this path, but it is ours to finish, to make it to the destination wherever that might be.

Destination to Happy!

As I stated in an earlier post, “there is no finish line.” I still concur. We all pursue our goals and when we hit them, we reestablish new ones. Many times we pursue multiple goals at the same time, and in the quest to achieve some of those others fall short in the short term. Along this path and in our quest to accomplish our goals we cross paths with many others, some of whom are on the same quest is us and others who are on different quests. But along the way we help others and they help us.

Maren and Jamie Showkeir – sister and brother in law

I have a brother-in-law who is suffering with the agony of ALS. He struggles with it day by day as does his dear wife who works hard to care for him. Together they have authored two books full of workplace wisdom. (See the books here) They now have an amazing caretaker that is now assisting. He is originally from Bhutan and spent many of his years of life in the travails of poverty and homelessness and struggles. He now is helping my brother-in-law to survive each day and to make it through each day. (see the full story here)

As I read about this man, named Moni, I was touched deeply by one thing that he had said.

We are all actors, acting in a larger play, he continued. Sometimes we play only one role, and sometimes we play many roles. And sometimes roles change.”

He noted before that that his role was to suffer, not just for himself, but for humanity, as he fled his home in Bhutan. He and his family went through eighteen years of extreme vulnerability. Constantly unsettled. Food was uncertain. Water, when it could be had, was unclean. Finding a sheltered place to sleep was a luxury.

After explaining this scenario to my brother-in-law, and after some other discussion, my brother-in-law asked him, “now what is your role?”

Moni replied I know what it is like to suffer,” Moni said. “And now my role is joy. I bring joy to those who are suffering.

So, as I rest on this Sunday and recover from the challenges of the past week, I am motivated to push even harder this upcoming week. I am motivated to take a few more struggling steps and have a bit more shortness of breath with each walk I take so that I can think of my dear brother-in-law who can no longer walk. Like Moni, I want to bring joy to those who are suffering. I may only be able to do it in a little, small way, but I hope that by overcoming the challenges that I’m dealing with that others may be able to overcome their own challenges, whatever they may be.

The Road to Success

In closing, I must show our great food choices from yesterday.  It was a beautiful day…a great day for grilling.  We grilled portabellas, potatoes, red bell peppers, asparagus, pineapple and plantains. Coupled with a salad, it was a great healthy day. Here are a few photos to inspire…once again, many items direct from Bountiful Baskets!
