Fitness Challenge Day 25 – Too Much of a Good Thing

Yesterday was a Saturday…a day to catch up on shopping, errands, chores, etc.  With so much running around, temptation and stress creep in making things difficult. It’s easy to think about just grabbing something to munch on, and this we did.  And, this morning I weighed in at 434.6 … up 1 pound from two days ago, but still a 15.4 loss since April 1. The snacking from yesterday coupled with no walk probably did me in.

The morning started with a good breakfast of fried potatoes with onions and some freshly sectioned grapefruit. Then it was off to the races for us.  I dropped Julianne off at Costco for a grocery run since we have used up most of our fruits and vegetables from last week’s Bountiful Baskets order.  Costco has some really good produce options and we typically can get a good quantity there.

But, there are also many temptations there…my favorite guacamole — Tableside Chunky Guacamole, for instance. Made with Hass avocados, tomatoes (tomatoes, tomato juice, salt, calcium chloride, citric acid), Red onions, onions, cilantro, lime juice, jalapenos, sea salt and garlic, it is a fairly healthy alternative to other guacs that have mayo in them.  And at 35 calories per serving, it is one of the best.  Julianne also picked up a bag of Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps. These contain no trans or saturated fats, 21-23 grams of carbohydrates per serving and very few calories. A great crunchy snack alternative. But too much of a good thing….  In fact, these are one of Dr. McDougall’s recommended snacks.

While she shopped, I went and got the car serviced.  The guys at Valvoline Instant Oil Change always take good care of me.  I have been seeing my friend Joe Seebold for years for oil changes and other services.  He is also and committed member of the #TeamSumoflam support team!!

After getting the car work done, I picked Julianne up from Costco and we headed off to Good Foods Coop, one of the healthy alternative markets in Lexington. We shop there for bulk items and some of the unique products, such as vegan bouillon (in beef and chicken flavors – See Edward & Sons) to make soups and chowders. But, no sooner were we on the road and we were breaking into a tub of guacamole and the pretzel crisps.

Julianne and I decided we wanted to try our hand at making Seitan and Good Foods Coop carries the bulk vital wheat gluten that is needed to make this.  Seitan is actually the Japanese word for vital wheat gluten.  I still crave meat badly.  But I have had seitan meat alternatives. Wheat gluten is often used instead of meat in Asian, vegetarian, Buddhist, and macrobiotic cuisines.  When I have had it I have enjoyed it.  (See a great photo and recipe for Seitan Pot Roast!!) Another thing we like to get at Good Foods are bulk nuts to add to our oatmeal or salads.  Nuts are good for you (if not overdone – much like guacamole).  But, they are also fattening.  And we like to get a few Brazil Nuts to snack on.  Ironically, we BOTH picked up a few yesterday and snacked on them as well.  Brazil nuts are high in calories, contain good quantities of vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals. 100 g of Brazil nuts provide about 656 calories. Their high caloric content chiefly comes from their fats. However, much of this fat content is mono-unsaturated fatty acids that help lower LDL or “bad cholesterol” and increase HDL or “good cholesterol” levels in the blood. But, too much of a good thing….

And, as I mentioned above, I get stressed I crave sweets.  So, at Good Foods I was tempted by the Coconut Date Rolls.  Made with dates, shredded coconut and water, these are probably much better than candy or chocolate.  But, dates and shredded coconut have lots of sugar…natural candy. I shouldn’t have picked up the package, but I did and we indulged after we got home.

But we made it home and Julianne made a massive salad for both of us, which had apples and slivered almondsand spring greens and romaine lettuce.  It was so big I couldn’t finish it (perhaps the snacking did me in?)  We also had organic 0 calorie whole wheat toast topped with Bilberry Fruit Spread. I believe that the sugar rush coupled with all of the running around pretty much drained me.  I sat in my chair for a small “power nap” and then had lots of work to do for some of my clients.  While I did this Julianne worked on her school projects.  After a few hours she came down and made the most amazing corn and potato chowder…all totally PlantPure!  She added some XXX Hatch Red Chile powder (just a half teaspoon) to add some zing!

A bit more work and we were off to bed.  I didn’t get a walk in…I needed to rest my knees.  This bums me out as it seems that my knees are constantly in pain lately.  But, I will still keep pushing it.  I know that as I continue to lose weight, I will also see reduced stress on my knees.  Pressing on!
