Fitness Challenge Day 66: The Poster Boy

By now most of my readers know that I have been training hard (hard as a 420 pound guy can do) to prepare to WALK the 5K at the Great American Fitness Challenge on June 13 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.  I am also on the planning and coordination team for the event.

Recently we had a couple of potential registrants who worried about WALKING the event rather than running.  They were out of shape and weren’t sure if they could do it.  It was decided that I would LEAD the walk effort and have thus become the “Poster Boy” for the 5K Walk.

Honestly, I have figured from the beginning that I would most likely finish last in the 5K event, but it doesn’t phase me because “FINISH” is the key word.  In 2009 I was dead last in the Midsummer Night’s Walk 5K in Lexington (see my post about this), but I did finish…and it was grueling.  And I don’t have any beliefs that next week’s walk won’t also be grueling.  But I will finish.  I am committed to do this.

The Great American Fitness Challenge promises to be a fun event with TONS of family activities and four different races that will challenge the walkers, the runners and the CrossFit specialists alike.  The 5K Walk/Run will be the easiest.  But the 15K run will be fun for those that like to run.  The two obstacle courses will be held on the Horse Park’s Steeplechase Course, the first time that humans have been allowed to run on this course.

Besides these four events, there will be Kentucky’s largest ever Yoga Class, a kid’s obstacle course, a number of other events like Tabata Boot Camp, Zumba, Nutritional Presentations and more.  The Marines will be running the 5K in formation.  Navy SEALs will be on site.  The National Guard will be competing in obstacle events. There will be an Army General and a Navy Admiral there to present the awards and the medals.

Honestly, I am thrilled to be a part of this event AND to participate in it.  This, coupled with my plant-based eating has led to a great opportunity for me to get my health back, my life back, etc.  Since April 1 I have lost 32 pounds, I have dropped 4 pant sizes, I am feeling better.

I am making efforts to walk more, everywhere I go.

Come join me and my TeamSumoflam on June 13th if you are in Kentucky or nearby.  If not, join me by getting yourselves in better shape, eating right and exercising.  You’ll be glad you did!
